You’ll be introduced to the city link in Banjul during two workshops and will find more information about the greening project being carried out in Banjul in collaboration with the Province of West Flanders. You’ll also be able to pick up postcards featuring photos of the greening activities in Banjul at café Koer during TAZ.
14.00-16.00 - sand painting workshop
Painting with sand is an ancient tradition in The Gambia, which is passed down from generation to generation. Artists use different colours and types of sand to create beautiful pictures and patterns on canvas, paper or wood. The artists draw their inspiration from the rich Gambian culture, traditions, landscapes and animals. The colours and textures of the sand give the artworks a unique and authentic look.
Inspired by this cultural richness from our sister city Banjul, participants will set to work using sand in various colours to embellish a James Ensor painting.
16.00-18.00 - Workshop on Senegambian masks made of African fabrics
Masks have deep cultural relevance throughout the world, including in Ostend and also in our sister city Banjul in The Gambia. They are used in ceremonies, rituals, theatres and carnivals. They often represent different aspects of human beings such as identity, spirituality, emotions and social roles. Masks are also used to break taboos, express fears or convey ideological messages. In West Africa, masks are regarded as bearers of spiritual power and often symbolise animals, gods, ancestors or spirits.
Taking inspiration from this cultural richness, participants will work with African fabrics, scissors and glue to create a unique mask using textiles from our sister city Banjul. We’ll still be able to use fabrics purchased in 2023.
Both workshops will take place on Saturday 3 August 2024 in the Wonderwaai central tent in Leopold Park. Advance registration is not necessary.
