On 4 August 2023, Kathelijn Vervarcke presented some of her selected Gambian fables and miracle stories from the oeuvre of Cornelius Gomez and Awa Jaw-Auber. In publishing 'Gambian folk tales and fables', the authors aimed to revive the dying art of storytelling by the fireside.
Audiences enjoyed a slice of authentic Gambian folk culture full of life lessons and were immersed in a wonderful world where animals, spirits and humans play a central part.
Kathelijn Vervarcke writes screenplays, historical works and novels. She founded the De Dakbroeders theatre group. She also works as a teacher of Dutch in GO! Athena Ostend Campus Centre. She received the Ostend Cultural Council prize in 2023 for her impressive body of work and for putting young people in touch with culture.
The stories are intended for everyone over 10 years of age. Knowledge of the Dutch language is recommended.
