Coconut palms on the beach
In 2020, the Ostend-Banjul city link received a European project grant that has given a considerable boost to the greening of Banjul. Five thousand coconut palms were planted on the beach to help combat coastal erosion. Banjul is at sea level, making rising sea levels an immediate threat to the city.
In the long term, the coconuts will also provide an additional source of income. Coconuts are full of healthy nutrients and there is very high worldwide demand for the coconut oil extracted from them. The shell of the nut can be incorporated into briquettes for making fires as an alternative to charcoal, and the nut itself can be used for decorative or practical purposes.
