As part of the EU-funded Future Proof Banjul project, the former school site on Crab Island is being transformed into a multi-purpose knowledge centre, a hub of innovation, vocational training and creativity.
Allotment gardens were started on the site years ago. Renovation works temporarily halted their use, but the gardens were reopened in autumn 2023. Demand for space to grow vegetables is exceeding supply.
The aim over the next three years - with support from the Province of West Flanders - is to create the best framework conditions for use of the gardens. A manager who will be responsible for the use of the equipment and will also be able to facilitate training for the gardeners has been appointed. There will also be a nursery for trees and plants and a place for composting to further boost the greening of Banjul.
With Tuinhier Akkerwinde, the aim is to exchange knowledge, e.g. on the proper management of equipment. This way, the two allotments will be formally linked to each other. An information board about the Crab Island site will be put up at the ‘De 3 Plantanen’ allotment site in Ostend.
