Entitled ‘City Link Ostend Banjul – Partnership for Sustainable City Development’ the city link between Ostend and Banjul received a project grant from the European Commission under the ‘Local Authorities: Partnerships for sustainable cities’ call for project proposals.

One of the conditions for those projects was the existence of a partnership between two local authorities that could contribute to integrated urban development in an EU partner country.

In this sense, the project in Banjul, capital city of The Gambia, contributes to strengthening the administrative functioning of the local government, increasing the city's resilience in respect of climate change, in particular, stimulating innovative entrepreneurship and increasing prosperity.

After the project grant had been awarded to Ostend and Banjul, the shortened project name 'Future Proof Banjul' was chosen.

Future Proof Banjul contributes to the creation of a resilient and liveable city as a hub of trade, prosperity, sustainability and good governance. The specific goals of the project focus on five pillars:

  1.         Good and effective governance
  2.         Greening Banjul
  3.         Crab Island multifunctional knowledge centre
  4.         Sustainable waste management
  5.         Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital
