In the Tanbi Wetlands Complex (TWC) national park, located next to Banjul and protected under the International Ramsar Convention, more than 15,000 mangrove bushes were planted in collaboration with the West African Bird Study Association (WABSA) between 2020 and 2023. The aim is to restore the former situation - before harmful human interventions - and replant mangroves where, for various reasons, they have been felled or died.
Around 10,000 mangroves have survived and the aim is to plant at least 3,000 over the next three years. The flood plain between Banjul and the Tanbi Wetlands meets the requirements, but other locations in the national park may also be considered.
Finally, planting mangroves in the Tanbi Wetlands will make a crucial contribution to protecting the flood plain next to Banjul and to maintaining the essential role wetlands play as a natural climate buffer.
