The EU funds enabled Banjul City Council (BCC) to reduce the amount of waste in the streets and illegal landfill sites by making structural changes in the current waste collection management system.
Two waste collection trucks and 5,700 waste containers for households and businesses were purchased, providing the impetus for the separation of waste streams and recycling of various materials.
Safety clothing was purchased for cleansing department staff, improving the hygienic conditions they were obliged to work in. Staff received a short first aid course and occupational health and safety training. All staff were vaccinated against tetanus and hepatitis B.
Numerous collective beach clean-ups were organised. Efforts were also made to raise awareness about fly-tipping and the correct use of water drains among Banjul residents.
Work was done with schools on composting organic material.
